Turning Agricultural Waste into Clean Power for AI and Climate Intelligence
Project Description for Partners & Government Stakeholders
Royal Technology – Powering AI with Olive Pomace Waste-to-Energy Infrastructure
Royal Technology LLC is advancing the development of a 1 MW Hydrothermal Treatment (HTT) waste-to-energy facility in the Vila Real region of Portugal, designed to convert approximately 12,000 tonnes of olive pomace annually into clean, continuous renewable power. The facility is intended to support a dedicated data center infrastructure focused on AI-driven analytics and advanced weather forecasting applications.
This initiative integrates sustainable biomass valorization with the growing demand for reliable, locally sourced energy to support digital infrastructure. The project is designed to deliver environmental, economic, and strategic benefits aligned with regional development and energy transition objectives.
Technology & Environmental Impact
The HTT system enables the efficient conversion of agricultural residues into renewable baseload electricity, with an expected annual generation of approximately 8,760 MWh. This output is equivalent to supplying electricity to around 2,000 households and contributes to the avoidance of an estimated 6,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year when compared with conventional fossil-fuel generation.
In addition to energy production, the facility is designed to generate approximately 1,500 tonnes of activated carbon annually, suitable for applications in water purification, industrial filtration, gas treatment, and environmental remediation. This multi-output design supports resource efficiency and strengthens the project’s contribution to circular-economy practices.
Feedstock Availability & Scalability
Portugal is one of Europe’s leading olive-oil producers, generating significant volumes of olive pomace as an agricultural byproduct each year. The availability of locally sourced, low-cost feedstock supports long-term operational stability while reducing environmental burdens associated with waste disposal.
The abundance of feedstock also provides scalability potential, enabling future capacity expansion or replication of similar facilities across other agricultural regions.
Project Structure & Delivery
Royal Technology LLC acts as a technology and project delivery partner, responsible for coordinating system integration, data-center energy alignment, and operational commissioning. A locally established special-purpose vehicle (SPV) supports transparent governance, operational clarity, and alignment with Portuguese regulatory and regional development frameworks.
The project timeline targets commissioning within approximately 12 months following groundbreaking, subject to permitting and construction schedules.
Public-Sector & Regional Benefits
For government and institutional stakeholders, the project directly supports priorities in:
Renewable energy deployment
Agricultural waste reduction
Rural economic development
Climate resilience and emissions reduction
Energy security for digital infrastructure
By transforming agricultural waste into clean power and high-value industrial materials, the initiative strengthens local value chains while enhancing regional energy self-sufficiency. Powering advanced AI and climate-analytics infrastructure with renewable energy further positions Portugal as a forward-looking hub for digital innovation and climate intelligence.
Strategic Collaboration Opportunities
For technology, industrial, and operational partners, the project represents a scalable clean-technology deployment model at the intersection of biomass energy, circular economy practices, and digital infrastructure. With secure feedstock availability, proven conversion technology, and strong environmental performance, Royal Technology’s olive pomace waste-to-energy initiative demonstrates a resilient framework for sustainable industrial collaboration.
